Joe Smith, a cornetist and trumpeter from Ohio with excellent technique, blues spirit and swing combined with a limpid and agile style, arrived in New York ca. 1920 where he played and recorded, among the others, with blues singer Bessie Smith (1925 / 1927), with Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra (1925-1927) and with The McKinney’s Cotton Pickers (1929-1930). Unfortunately he died at the age of 35.
