When you see professionals using a product, it’s a good indication that they know the value of the tool, and what they paid for it delivers great performance and longevity.

In this episode, we compare Felco® 201 and 221 series loppers. Each series is offered with different handle lengths. The suffix designates these lengths. For instance, the 201-50 has an overall length of 500 mm. The “50” is the first two digits of “500.”

We have Felco®’s 201-50 and 221-80 loppers.

The 201 series is designed to cut branches up to 1.38 inches (35 mm). Our 201-50 is about 500 mm overall length, about 19-¾”. They are very light, with all components being replaceable. The handles are aircraft aluminum, with the tool being well-balanced and weighing about 1.72# - .78 kg. This Swiss-made tool is very nice and will last a long time.

We found these to be great for working on moderately sized trees and shrubs. The shorter handles allow you to work in tighter spaces, while giving good reach.

You should expect to pay about $70 for this model.

The 221 series is designed to cut branches up to 1-¾” (44 mm). Our 221-80 is about 800 mm overall length, about 31-½”. For a sizable pruner, they are very light and comfortable to use, while offering excellent reach. The gullet on the blade is deeper than the 201 series, allowing the 220 to grasp and cut bigger branches, while the extended handles provide needed leverage. The 221-80 weighs about 2.75# - 1.25 kg.

The 221-80 costs about $114.

These aren’t cheap, but you get what you pay for. When you see plenty of “knock-offs” of a product, it indicates that the original is of high value and has built a reputation that others want to ride the coattails of. A quick search online for “Felco Pruners” will yield a listing of other brands and counterfeits similar to the Felco® original, but they aren’t even close.

I also appreciate that every part is replaceable. This isn’t a tool you throw away after a season — it’s an investment that can last a lifetime with proper care.
