The Berber lion, also known as the Barbary lion or the Atlas lion, was a magnificent predator once roaming the Atlas Mountains of North Africa. Known for its large size and distinctive dark mane, it was a symbol of power and majesty. As one of the largest lion subspecies, it thrived in dense forests and mountainous terrains, preying on large animals like Barbary deer. Unfortunately, the Berber lion became extinct in the wild by the 20th century due to hunting and habitat loss, surviving only in captivity as a poignant reminder of the fragility of biodiversity.
