Hype/Sneaker Resellers in India

I’m going to mention Instagram followers because it’s super important. Building HYPE for sneakers is built mainly through visuals. In the end, this is fashion after all and the looks matter so much.

If you look at the marketing funnel, it starts with Awareness - most people in India are still not aware of these kind of streetwear sneakers in India and Instagram is super important for these brands to build that awareness.

1. Veg Non Veg - 380k on Instagram - Owned by Anand Ahuja, husband of Sonam Kapoor. Also owns RISE by Camp.in which is a Strategic Partner for Nike stores in India. Also Bhaane which is a street clothing brand. Difficult to research this brand cause I constantly came across articles about vegetarian and vegan shoes. And way too much bollywood gosspit like this article. Read an [interview with the other founder of Veg NonVeg, Abhineet Singh, which gave me absolutely no information.

2. Super Kicks India - 269k followers on Instagram. They have 4 stores in 📍Mumbai📍Bengaluru📍Delhi 📍Guwahati. Very strange financials.

3. Main Street Marketplace - 64k on Instagram and 34k on YouTube - calls itself India’s premier hype platform. Started as a YouTube channel 4 years ago. Have retail stores in Chatrapur in Delhi and Bandra in Bombay - started the Bombay store in 2020 and Delhi in 2021. They’re going hard on Content Marketing with what they called MainstreetTV - I found it funny that they did a YouTube podcast episode with Harshvardhan Kapoor, their main rival’s brother in law. My wife actually went to school with Harshvardhan Kapoor and has funny stories about him. From my research - Main Street overall has the best PR. I’ve found tonnes of articles, including in GQ. Founded by Vedant Lamba when he was only 22 - his father is called Anil Lamba, has some kind of financial training firm - sells courses online. Interesting Seed Investors - raised at the end of 2021.

4. Crepdogcrew - 51.3K followers on Instagram - saw a Zest ad on their website - BNPL

Business Opportunities in Shoe & Sneaker Reselling in India

1. Is there even a market for this in India?

100% - but it is a niche in the footwear market. India is in fact *the second largest footwear market* after China, with a value of over *$10 billion* in 2019, set to grow to $15.5 billion by 2024.

Not a huge market but I think people can build a solid niche business within the larger scope of footwear.

Also, most super HYPED sneaker reselling brands also get into selling HYPE clothing. Supreme even sold a brick at one point. As long as you’re building a brand that people engage with - you’ll be able to sell almost anything. This is alllllll about marketing.

2. Marketplace for Buyers & Sellers to interact with each other on one platform. Unless there is already one that I couldn’t find. Right now, a lot of basic reselling of non-hyped shoes is happening on general platforms like OLX. for example - Main Street Marketplace started by selling a shoe on OLX.

Selling of hyped shoes is happening directly on all those reseller websites or on private WhatsApp groups. This is causing pricing asymmetry which is harmful to both buyers and sellers - the buyers don’t know what the actual price of a product is and have to trust the seller while the sellers only have a limited audience, they could probably find better prices with a larger audience.
