In this second part of our nine-part series on web service design, we cover the five dictionaries and the important, flexible list() call.

Every business application we build needs to have five dictionaries. The technical leads who design the application maintain these dictionaries, and they are used by both the front-end and the server-side code. This eliminates hard-coding at various levels and in various areas. We distinguish between constants which are embedded in the source code and configurable parameters which may be edited without restarting the server-side application code. If an embedded constant is to be changed, the source code needs to be edited, the application needs to be rebuilt, and then released, thus requiring the entire testing and release process. If a configurable parameter is edited, it can be done using a GUI in a minute, and the changes get propagated to your entire cluster of server-side container instances thanks to Remiges Rigel. The list() call is required for all sets of web service calls which maintain CRUD operations on an object class. The list() call pulls out all object instances matching filter criteria.
