Our guest Sławomir Raszewski from the University of East London argues that Russia is selling its oil at heavy discounts – often 20 to 30 dollars below global prices – just to keep buyers interested, and that’s costing the country huge amounts of money over time.

He says this isn’t a new problem, but one that’s been building up for years as Russia has fewer crude oil clients and less bargaining power. Sanctions clearly matter, but in Raszewski's view they don’t stop the oil from flowing – they mainly force Russia to sell cheaper and through more complicated channels.

According to Raszewski, buyers like India and China know Russia has limited options and use that to push for even bigger discounts. He also points out that oil exports continue through secondary companies and intermediaries, showing that sanctions are often worked around rather than fully enforced.

In the long run, Raszewski warns, this could weaken Russia’s ability to fund its state budget and military, even if there will always be some buyers willing to take the risk.
