UK Weather Forecast: Heavy Snow In The North - Heavy Rain In The South (Sunday 5th January 2025)

Good morning and welcome to todays UK weather forecast on Sunday 5th January 2025

Current Situation: Low pressure is moving into cold air but also bringing warmer air with it... Snow and rain will bring disruptive weather in places today...

Today:

Sunday begins with heavy snow across northern England and heading into southern Scotland. Freezing rain could be falling through parts of Wales and Midlands giving icy conditions with heavy rain in the south. Central and northern Scotland are mostly dry but very cold.

Through the rest of the day heavy snow will continue through parts of northern England and southern Scotland with 20-40cm possible over the trans-Pennine routes. Heavy rain is likely further south but there will be drier periods too. Northern Ireland will have a wintry mix while central and northern Scotland should stay mostly dry but very cold.

A huge temperature range today with temperatures of -1C to +13C north to south across the country.

Tonight:

Outbreaks of rain will push back southeastwards across England and Wales, perhaps turning to sleet and snow for a time in the back edge. Clear skies and snow showers will follow to Scotland and Northern Ireland. A very mild night in the south east with temperatures holding up at 12C but generally turning colder from the north with temperatures of -3C To 0C from Scotland to Wales and the Midlands.

Tomorrow

Rain, sleet and snow will clear away steadily to the east with snow showers in the north and west but also a lot of dry and sunny weather. A cold day with temperatures of 0C to 6C.

Outlook:

Tuesday: Cold with snow showers in the north.

Wednesday: Very cold but mostly dry. A little rain and snow in the far south later.

Thursday: Very cold with severe frost early and late but most places staying dry.
