Tropics Update: Hurricane Rafael churns in the Gulf of Mexico

Hurricane Rafael exited Cuba and is making its way into the central Gulf of Mexico. From there, it will turn from the northwest to the west, where the environment becomes less favorable. The hurricane should eventually weaken in the western Gulf of Mexico as it encounters shearing winds. It is too soon to determine what, if any, impacts Rafael could bring to portions of the northern Gulf Coast. Residents in this area should regularly monitor updates to the forecast.
