Visiting Colorado and looking for a gorgeous day hike to an alpine lake that's not super crowded? Or live in Colorado and looking for a warm up to 14er season? Either way, Woodland Lake in the Indian Peaks Wilderness is a great option, especially if you don't want to have to worry about getting a permit ahead of time. This 9(ish)-mile hike begins at the Hessie Trailhead in Eldora, Colorado, which is about an hour and 15 minutes from Denver and 45 minutes from Boulder. While the trailhead does tend to fill up, most people only hike the 4-mile roundtrip trail to Lost Lake, then go home. As soon as you turn onto the trail toward Woodland Lake and away from Lost Lake, the trail empties out significantly. The lake is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS and when I was there on a weekend day in late June, I had it completely to myself.

Note: I said the name of this lake incorrectly in the intro - sorry!! It is WOODLAND Lake, not Wonderland Lake. (There is a Wonderland Lake in Boulder, which is where my brain went).
