The electric water pump on the E90 BMW will eventually just die and leave you stranded on the side of the road, so it's definitely something you need to replace as a part of the standard maintenance on an older E90, but, hey, at least the pulley doesn't explode and send plastic chucks throughout the cooling system like the previous generation.
