Different types of bone marrow transplants

A bone marrow transplant is a type of treatment where healthy stem cells are transplanted into a patient whose stem cells are diseases or infected due to diseases or treatment procedures like chemotherapy.

The transplant of bone marrow can be done in multiple ways. Autologous bone marrow transplant is the first type of bone marrow transplant treatment. Here, the donor is the patient themself, and the stems cells are collected from the patient by bone marrow harvest or apheresis. Allogenic bone marrow transplant is the second type in this treatment, in which the donor is different than the patient but shares the same genetic type. The donors can be brothers or sisters, parents, or an unrelated person meeting the requirements. Umbilical cord transplant is the third type of bone marrow transplant. In this procedure, stem cells are collected from the umbilical cord after delivery. They are tested, typed, counted, and frozen for future transplants if needed.
