Spores of loose smut form clouds of sooty dust during mowing of an infected hayfield in Marion County, Oregon. Smut diseases, caused by fungi in the order Ustilaginales, pose a serious threat to hay and grass seed production. Loose smut disease has led to yield losses, reductions in forage quality and contamination concerns.

Loose smut infestation back again June 2025. Field not hayed, bush hogged instead. Smut spores are the dark powder rising. Also note the thick black dust deposited atop the mower. [Footage of dark clouds rising up from the hayfield behind the mower].
