This is a brief history of Asia's fiercest rivalry - the Kolkata Derby.



No other Indian football match produces as much excitement and pomp as the Kolkata Derby. Ever since this nation first learned about sports, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have had a legendary rivalry, which has endured even after both teams joined the ISL. Mohun Bagan vs. East Bengal is more than just a football rivalry. It is a mood and a component of Bengali ethos that is fundamental to Bengali identity. It makes no difference who plays for either team or who coaches them; all that matters is that it is a battle between the Green and Maroon and the Red and Gold.
Mohun Bagan is the oldest team in Indian football history to be still active and one of the pioneers in the history of the game in the nation, after being founded in 1889 by Bhupendra Nath Basu and three other families. Mohun Bagan relates directly to the freedom struggle of India under the Britishers, and the biggest achievement in the history of the club comes in 1911 when they did the unthinkable- winning the IFA Shield, and defeating professionally equipped English football clubs. In the finals of the same, they came back from behind against one of the best teams in the region- East Yorkshire Regiment, in the dying seconds of the game in front of a crowd of eighty thousand.
As for East Bengal, the formation was more like a breakaway from a club named Jora Bagan Club, after disputes fell out between the then president Suresh Chandra Chaudari in 1920. Shri Suresh then formed East Bengal and named it so owing to the roots of the founding members over in Bangladesh, the eastern region of West Bengal.
