Описание к видео Audio Book Review: Country Life In Georgia In The Days Of My Youth by Rebecca Latimer Felton

Country Life In Georgia by Rebecca Latimer Felton
Published in 1919 by Index Printing Company

Rebecca Latimer Felton was the first female US Senator. She was *also*, in that same moment, the last formerly slave owning US Senator. Earlier in life she had been the first female to own and edit a newspaper in Georgia. Her early life was spent with the men of her life owning slaves while she lived on their plantations as either their daughter or wife. After witnessing Sherman's Atlanta Campaign firsthand - along with the devastation it wrought - she spent her remaining years as a teacher and political activist, working on behalf of young (white) women to promote their education and for them to be free from spousal and societal abuse.

Problematic by 2020s standards - even within the text of this very book a certain "N" word is used more than once - she was also an extremely progressive woman of her own era.

Her story is largely forgotten, even in the town she lived in for so many decades. And yet her story bears so many direct lessons for us even in the 2020s.
