Should the Engine Ignition Be Connected to the House or Starter Battery?

Izaac has a great two-part question. He asks, "Jeff, should the engine ignition switch (glow plugs and gauges, etc.) be connected to the engine battery or the house battery bank? And how do I make sure that the keys are not left on and flatten the battery."
