We took a day trip to Kyoto from Tokyo to see all the best sites the city had to offer! We packed the day with vists to the Fushimi Inari Shrine, Arashiyami Bamboo Forest, Iwatayama Monkey Park, the Gion District, and the Yasaka Pagoda

From Tokyo, we boarded the JR bullet train and were in Kyoto in about 2 hours! It was a cloudy day so no views of Mt. Fuji, but sit on the right side of the train and you might get lucky! Once we arrived in Kyoto, our first stop was the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine. This is a Shinto shrine that is known for its thousands of Red Tori gates that lead up into a forest at the foot of a mountain. There are several smaller shrines dotting the path, be sure to stop on the way up to admire their beautiful statues and offering tables!

Across the street from the shire is a great little food stop called the Daily Yamazaki Market which has great budget-friendly grab-and-go options.

Next up was the Bamboo Forest. It’s only a short train or bus ride across the city. We explored the area on a weekend and it was quite busy. To beat the foot traffic try coming to this beautiful location on a weekday!

Next, we headed up to the Iwatayama Monkey Park to lounge around with some Japanese  Macaquest. Getting up to the park was a bit of a hike, so make sure to bring your hiking shoes! Once at the top the view of the city and the monks made it all worthwhile. Be sure to take advantage of the feeding room next to the man-made pond. It was so much fun watching the monkeys eat the treats we gave them.

A quick 30-minute tram got us back to the city center so we could explore the Gion District to try to catch a glimpse of the famous Geisha who are known to work in this area. Although they don’t allow filming in this district we highly recommend it. Watching the graceful Geisha interact with their guests was a highlight of our day. The restaurants and experiences in this district are more expensive than in other parts of the city, so we decided to grab dinner once we left Gion.

The Yasaka Pagoda was one of our final stops for our tour of Kyoto. There are plenty of places to snap the perfect picture along the way! Next to the pagoda was a shrine dedicated to three monkeys and a guardian who helps you make your wishes come true. Spoiler alert - realizing your dreams is all about letting go of your desires.

Finally, we grabbed some Ramen for dinner and headed back to the train station to catch our bullet train back to Tokyo. It was such an amazing and fun-filled day trip!
