I'm so excited to share that I'll be running the Dublin Marathon this October to fundraise for the Irish Deaf Society (IDS)!

This year the IDS is fundraising for mental health within Ireland's Deaf community. In addition to my video, I've also written a short story that I published to my fundraising page (https://eventmaster.ie/fundraising/pa...) describing why this means so much to me.

Transcription: Hi! I have some news I want to share in both ASL and English. First, if you don’t know, around the world, sign language is not universal. There are many different sign languages, not just one. For example, here in America we have ASL, American Sign Language. If I fly to Ireland, they’d use ISL, Irish Sign Language. They’re different. Got it? Great! I’m hearing, learning ASL. Today I’m signing my video to spread awareness for the Irish Deaf Society (IDS). This October I’ll be running the Dublin Marathon to support them. I’m really excited! The IDS supports the Irish Deaf community by advocating for the equal rights of Deaf people, supporting ISL education and accessible services, spreading awareness to barriers the Deaf community faces, and working with the Irish government to create policies to address these issues. This year the IDS’s fundraising focus is mental health. The IDS uploaded a paper describing mental health struggles the Deaf community faces. One quote that stuck with me was Deaf people experience a double stigma- one for being Deaf and another for mental illness. Throughout Deaf history there has been a long history of oppression and many struggles, like language deprivation and a lack of accessibility, which contribute to a higher risk of mental health problems. In America, the ADA became law in 1990 requiring interpreters. In Ireland, it wasn’t until 2017 that a law finally passed requiring interpreters and recognizing ISL as a language.
