I am learning Bisaya, the language of my wife’s home. This began as a tragic very bad translation of another Bisaya song I did which gradually evolved into a lement of long distance love.

Goal: two parallel songs that can be sung bilingually in Bisaya & English. I have put in the lyrics at the bottom of the videos in both Bisaya and English. Lower left. Use “Clear Display” by long pressing the middle of the screen in TikTok.

I started out by doing a Bad Translation of another song I wrote by listening to what it sounded like as if I did not know Bisaya.

A big challenge was weaving idium, allusion & allegory that worked cross culturally in both languages but avoided saying things I did not want to explicity state. Lots of double-entendres & innuendo. Bilingually & cross culturally was a fun challenge.

Three primary themes interweave in a way that can be understood in either language. There are undercurrents that you may only catch if you know either language deeply & best if you are culturally fluent in both. This makes for an extra depth of meaning but is not required.

I had help from both Google Translate & my wife who natively speaks Bisaya. Up to this point was about four days.

After I had done many drafts back & forth between languages to find parallel phrasology & concepts I showed the lyrics to ChatGPT. We went through seven rounds. ChatGPT is very helpful & knowledgeable, assisting me futher with Bisaya cultural & linquistic twists. Working with ChatGPT, an AI, is like having a coach or friend who is also multilinguial. It is amazing to have someone so patient to go over & over drafts. When we got done ChatGPT rewrote most of the Bisaya on the last pass. I fine tuned it in several more passes. A day.

I used SunoAI app on my iPhone to generate many versions of the instrumentals & vocals, experimenting with style, length, chorases, outro & refining lyrics some more. After about 50 passes I got it to where I wanted for both the vocals in both languages. A day.

To create the video I hired thousands of local actresses here in the Philippines. Just kidding. That is outside my time budget. Instead, I used OpenAI’s new Sora browser based video clip generator on my iPhones in Google’s browser. Sora can do 10 seconds at a time. I did a LOT of 10 second takes. The Queen of Boo in her throne room of despair came out right fairly early in the process, followed by a lot of messy clips. A day.

I used TikTok’s video editor on my iPhone to create the full length video with fades & audo track. I discovered that you can “Delete and Re-edit” in TikTok in the three dots menu on the lower right side inside a song. Worked when set to private. Doing captions for the lyrics was not working well so I switch to…

Capcut Pro on my MacBook Air M2 8G. CapCut AI generated captions did not work - the AI understands Tagalog aka Filipino but not Bisaya, very distinct languages - think Spanish vs French. I hand entered the lyrics in biligually & also made the cover shot. A long day.

There are free versions but this project was the one that made it worth it to me to buy the paid subscriptions for all of them. $300 and eight days. This is to the point where I published the Bisaya version: “Loopy Ka Rentas sa Boo”.

I polished the English lyrics a bit more to fit the video timing & ran it through Suno more. A few more clips in Sora to smooth out the flow. Back to Capcut for final edits. Three days.
