Описание к видео He Was Buried Alive for 30 Hours Under Arctic Ice

In an age of heroes and explorers, there was one man who seemed like a work of fiction. His name was Peter Freuchen, and he was a Danish giant, standing over 6'7" tall, who traded the comfort of Europe for the brutal beauty of Greenland. He didn't just explore the Arctic; he lived it. He married an Inuit woman, hunted polar bears, and became a legend in his own lifetime.
His life is a catalog of almost superhuman feats of survival. The most famous is the tale of his escape from an icy prison. Trapped under the snow in a blizzard, he found his beard had frozen into an icy helmet, pinning his head to the ground. With his pickaxe out of reach, he did the unthinkable: he fashioned a chisel from his own frozen feces and carved his way to freedom.
On another occasion, when gangrene set into his toes after frostbite, he knew waiting for help was a death sentence. Without anesthesia or medical tools, he amputated them himself using a hammer and pliers. He would later lose his entire leg, replacing it with a wooden peg leg he wore for the rest of his life.
But his courage wasn't limited to fighting nature. During World War II, he was an active member of the Danish Resistance. When the Nazis arrested him, they couldn't hold him. The one-legged giant escaped their custody and fled to Sweden.
But perhaps the most surreal act of his life came in his final years. This hardened Arctic explorer and Resistance veteran appeared on the American TV show The $64,000 Question and... won the grand prize. The one-legged giant who fought polar bears and Nazis charmed America with his wit and intelligence.
