Each year, millions of philanthropic dollars are distributed to thousands of organizations across the world in response to disasters and humanitarian crises. This funding is dwarfed by the billions of dollars invested by governments. But it’s never enough money, and funds are not always directed at the highest needs. Additionally, underserved and under-
resourced communities are often ignored in response and recovery. Giving circles are positioned to support equitable recovery given their proximity to disasters. They often have a more comprehensive understanding of the issues that exacerbate systemic vulnerabilities.

Trends from the Center for Disaster Philanthropy and Candid’s Measuring the State of Disaster Philanthropy report, plus promising practices for giving, can help inform ideas for giving strategies and disaster-focused giving circles, grounded in equity. This lightning talk will provide members of giving circles (now or future), and those that support them, with an
understanding of how giving circles can support disaster recovery.
