1971 Plymouth Cuda 426 Hemi drag race 1969 Chevy Camaro ZL1
Jordan Pennington's 1969 Camaro ZL1:    • Stock Appearing 1969 ZL1 Camaro 700RW...
First car is a 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda. The other a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The Hemi Cuda of course features a 426 Hemi V8. The Camaro has an all aluminum ZL1 427. The Hemi Cuda was rated 425 horsepower stock, and the ZL1 430 horsepower...both very underrated. Both cars feature automatic transmission. The Hemi Cuda has a TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic, while the 1969 Chevy Camaro has a TH400 (Turbo 400). Rear gearing is unknown for both cars. Curb weight for the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is around 3500 pounds, so it has a weight advantage over the 3721 curb weight of the Hemi Cuda. The Hemi Cuda option was expensive, running around $871. However, the ZL1 option was a whopping $4160!! There were only 69 total 1969 Chevy Camaro ZL1 produced, and even less 1971 Plymouth Cuda Hemi automatic equipped cars at 48. Original testing of the ZL1 by Hi Performance Cars magazine in 8/1969 with a completely stock car netted 13.16 seconds @ 110 mph. However, only 3 months early Super Stock magazine used the same car, threw on a set of open headers and 6.5 inch wide slicks, and ran 11.64 seconds @ 122 mph. The 1970 Hemi Cuda was assessed by Cars Magazine and ran the 1/4 mile in 13.45 seconds @ 115 mph...but that was a convertible with an automatic transmission and 4.10 gears.

Remember, both cars participate in the FAST (Factory Appearing Stock Tire) series of drag racing. Please visit their website. https://www.fastdrags.com

Here are their rules:

ANYONE USING NITROUS OXIDE WILL BE BANNED FROM PARTICIPATING FOR LIFE!

ENGINE
2.01 Engine block must appear to be a correct* original block and must be of the same engine family and exterior size.
The block must be made from the same material as the correct* original block. Approved aftermarket replacement blocks are allowed (see list below).
There will be a 560 cubic inch limit on all engines except the Ford 429/460 based power plants which will be allowed 620 cubes.
If you think you can get more than the allotted cubic inches out of a stock production block you will have to contact the FAST Board of Director and have your combination approved prior to racing.
2.02 Dealer installed engines and dealer performed modifications are not allowed.
2.03 Cylinder Heads and Intake Manifold MUST be correct* OEM casting, have correct* original casting numbers and be of correct* original material.
This may very well be the most important and teched F.A.S.T. rule.
Note: Any cylinder head or intake manifold that is not the correct* casting number, must be approved and published on the F.A.S.T. website.
Casting date codes are not looked at and are not part of the tech process.
2.04 Internal engine modifications OK.

FUEL SYSTEM AND CARBURETOR
3.01 The carburetor must appear externally correct*.
Internal modifications are OK. Carburetor housing must be the correct* housing for your application. The stamped part number need not be correct*.
For example any 750 Q-jet can replace any 750 Q-jet as long as it externally appears correct*, but an 800 Q-jet cannot replace a 750 Q-jet, even if it does appear externally correct.

EXHAUST
4.01 Cast iron exhaust manifolds are mandatory and must be correct*, have correct* casting numbers and be of correct* material.
Under no circumstances will headers be allowed, including those cars that had headers delivered in the trunk.
Internal modifications are OK. Correct* appearing exhaust manifold paint or coatings are OK. Casting date codes are not looked at and are not part of the tech process.
4.02 Even if equipped from the factory with cut-outs, all runs must be made with closed exhaust running through the mufflers.
4.03 Exhaust systems may be upgraded to a maximum of 2.5" diameter head and tail pipes.
Exception: Certain Max Wedge cars left the factory with 3" inch head pipes, these cars can retain these head pipes up to, but not past, the transmission tail-shaft.

IGNITION SYSTEM
8.01 The distributor, distributor cap and coil must appear correct,
Distributor housing does not need to have original part number stamped in body.
8.02 Coil must be retained in the correct* location.
8.03 Aftermarket ignition boxes allowed, if mounted out of sight.

DRIVETRAIN
11.01 Vehicles that only came with 4-speeds may convert to automatics and vice/versa.
This must be done in a matter that reflects how the factory would have done it, OEM correct* shifters, linkage, consoles if equipped,
and hardware MUST be used and the conversion must look 100% correct to the FASTRACES LLC.

REAR AXLES
12.01 The rear axle housing must be of the same manufacturer as the car. OEM appearing aftermarket housings are OK.
Internal modifications are OK. Any gear ratio allowed. Aftermarket axles are OK.
Upgrade to posi-unit or spool is OK.
