The Okanagan is a region in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It's known for its wineries and fruit orchards. The main city of Kelowna, on the shore of huge Okanagan Lake, is surrounded by pine forests and provincial parks. Kelowna's downtown area incorporates waterfront City Park and a lakeside cultural district. The area around the cities of Kelowna, Vernon and Kamloops is home to several ski resorts.

The Okanagan Valley in British Columbia has a semi-arid climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters:
Temperature
The average daily temperature in January is between 0 and -5°C (32 and 23°F), while in July it's 20 to 22°C (68 to 72°F). However, temperatures can drop to -32°C (-26°F) in the winter and soar to 40°C (104°F) in the summer.
Precipitation
The average annual precipitation is about 280 millimeters (11 inches), with about half falling as snow in the winter. The southern part of the region receives less precipitation than the north, and summers are becoming drier.

The Okanagan has a true four-season climate, with warm summers and mild winters.
Rain shadow
The Okanagan is in a rain shadow created by the Cascade Mountains to the southwest, which blocks most rainy weather systems.
Soil
The soils are mostly alkaline, with an average pH of 7.6. The southern part of the region has deep sandy soils, while the area around Kelowna has mainly clay and gravel soils.
