I’ve noticed two silver linings to AI infiltrating
one of our most sacred art forms.
The first being, as a music producer, it’s
encouraged me to keep my imperfections.
Less tuning on my vocals, guitar squeaks,
amp buzz, etc. After all, what is art? Is it a
product? Is it the manifestation of good? Or
is it:
“Art is that human activity which consists in
man’s consciously conveying to others,
by certain external signs, the feelings he has
experienced, and in others being infected by
those feelings and also experiencing them.”What is Art? - Leo Tolstoy
If it’s a product. AI away. Generate the most
crystalized form of familial pop music you can,
and sell it. Just know, I think you’re pathetic.
Now, if the point of art is to convey your human
emotion to another, shouldn’t you go in the
opposite direction?
Shouldn’t you spend the time to find your
own, unpopular voice? Shouldn’t you learn
how to speak authentically through your
art form? Shouldn’t you embrace your
imperfections?
Not only have I found more confidence to
embrace my musical insecurities, I’ve also
found a deep joy in listening to “bad”
human music. Music from beginners who
maybe aren’t that great at singing, producing,
or mixing yet. I have such a respect for them
trying to learn how to improve rather
than asking some 0’s and 1’s to,
“add a groovy guitar loop.”
The second silver lining is a cultural one.
Most passive music listeners will accept AI.
They just hear a block of sound anyway.
But to those who are fascinated by the
individual instruments, the songwriting, the
band members. To you, have you noticed a
collective shift toward appreciating
unadulterated, human creation?
I believe AI is unintentionally bringing the music
culture together. At least the artists and musicians I would
hang out with. The ones who aren’t telling
their audience to use their code to get
a subscription for SUNO AI. Or,
“Top 10 AI Hacks to Make Better Beats!”
I feel closer to my audience and strangers
online becuase of our collective rejection
of AI. Who knows, Spotify may (probably
will) continue to infiltrate their platform with
fake, proprietary AI artists. Maybe one day
most streamable music won’t come from
humans. I’m actually not too worried
about that.
I believe in us. I know we’ll find a way to
listen, watch , and read art from other humans.
Because it’s important to us that what we’re
consuming is coming from a human who had
a human emotion. After all, that’s what art
is all about.
