On June 1st, 1990, a tragic event unfolded at Lichfield City railway station when two paramilitary members of the Provisional IRA ambushed three off-duty British soldiers. The soldiers, who were in training at Whittington Barracks, were waiting on the platform for a train to Birmingham for weekend leave. Suddenly, the attackers appeared, drew handguns, and fired at the soldiers. The attack resulted in the death of 18-year-old Private William Robert Davies from Pontarddulais, South Wales, and left two others, Robert Parkin, aged 20, and Neil Evans, aged 19, injured. A British Rail employee who witnessed the shooting courageously jumped across the tracks to try and assist the soldiers, attempting to staunch the bleeding of the critically wounded Davies.

In a moving act of respect and remembrance, participants of the Woody’s Lodge Bike Ride laid a wreath on June 16th, 2024, to honour the memory of those affected by this tragic incident.
