At first level and flat, at Around Mountain Carriage Road it's terrain & difficulty change dramatically.
Cliffside iron & wood railings, cliffside bridges & granite climbing create an incredible climb!

SPRING TRAIL begins behind Jordan Pond House by a set of signs detailing the area around Jordan Pond. It descends a set of steps to the carriage road junction and then crosses Jordan Pond Stream on a wood bridge.

Crossing the stream it enters the woods and goes along on gravel paths, up and down stone steps to the trailhead of JORDAN CLIFFS TRAIL. That trail may be closed due to nesting Peregrine Falcons, but is my favorite trail in Acadia National Park.

From here SPRING TRAIL climbs steeply up to Around Mountain Carriage Road and crossing it the terrain becomes quickly and significantly more difficult. Beginning with a set of wood rails and iron rungs along the cliffside, it continues up stone steps to a second set of wood railings along with bridges over gaps in the next cliffside.

After this climbing the granite cliffside without rails leads to a railing aided narrow ledge followed by more climbing and crossing an unprotected steep drop. A final stet of stone steps leads to the overview of Jordan Pond and a rock bench.

Gentle steps and root covered paths complete the climb up to join PENOBSCOT MOUNTAIN TRAIL on which you can summit Penobscot Mountain in ~0.8 mi and possible see the falcons flying off the cliffs along the way.

Alternate, shorter routes than what you intend to hike are abundant in Acadia...
your hiking plan can include them as contingencies.
