HAL LUH order and requirement

We are soon going to witness big boost in the helicopter strength of Indian Army and some in air force as well. When I say soon, we can expect them in next one two years, regarding which we are going to update in today’s video. As per my analysis Indian Armed forces will atleast get 25-30 helicopters under various category this year, which is quite significant. So, lets start today’s video an try to understand how is armed forces looking to boost its rotatory capabilities.

HAL LUH Development Progress

As per reports from the Hindustan Times, 2 LUH is in advance stage of production. The first LUH will be delivered by August this year. HAL will produce 4 Limited Series LUH by 2022-23 i.e. present financial year. The remaining 8 LUH will be delivered in 2023-24 i.e. next financial year.

Out of the 4 LUH which will be delivered by this financial year, each army and air force will receive 2 of them. From the second production batch, 4 LUHs will be given to army and air force. Once the 12 LSP LUH order is complete, HAL will start the series production (SP) of LUH.
The defence ministry also needs to clear Acceptance of Necessity for 175 more LUHs which has been pending for quite a long time. Without sufficient order in time, the HAL’s capacities would run idle, and production would see delay due to non-availability of critical items.

9 out 15 LCH ready

On 30th March 2022, the Cabinet committee on security chaired by PM Narendra Modi has given approval for procurement of 15 LCH – light combat Helicopter limited series production or LSP. Three LSP LCH has already been produced by HAL. Out Of 15 LSP LCH on order, nine have been produced. 2 of them have been deployed by Air Force, one by Army and remaining are in acceptance stage.

On June 1, 2022, the Army raised its first LCH squadron at Bengaluru. Next year, It will moved to Eastern Command once it’s ready. 7 LCH units are planned by Army’s aviation brigade, each having 10 helicopters for combat roles in the mountains.

Indian Air Force has requirement of 65 LCH and army has requirement of 114 of them. As per the HAL’s CMD the PSU is expecting a much bigger order of LCH after the delivery of LSP. This can be expected sometime next year.

6 + 11 Apache AH-64

As we know that the Cabinet Committee had initially sanctioned the procurement of 39 AH-64 Apache attack helicopters from the U.S. Following this, the IAF procured 22 Apaches in September 2015. India and the US signed another contract for the acquisition of six Apaches for the Indian Army during US President Donald Trump’s visit to New Delhi. There has been delay in the deliveries of these due to the COVID pandemic and are now scheduled to begin deliveries in early 2024. These six Apache attack helicopters will have indigenous fuselages manufactured by Tata Advanced Systems.

In addition, the Army is pushing the case for the remaining 11 Apaches of the 39 sanctioned. A senior Boeing official had recently confirmed that they were in talks with the Indian Army for additional Apaches.

25 ALH MK-III

The Army has three Aviation Brigades at Leh, Missamari and Jodhpur. It operates around 145 indigenous Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH), 75 of which are the weaponised version of Dhruv known as Rudra. In September 2021, the DAC has accorded the approval for the procurement of 25 ALH Mark III helicopters. HAL will start the production and deliveries of these helicopters also from this year onwards and will be inducted into Army in phased manner in next two years.

42-48 ALH Rudra for IAF

While Army is working to boost its rotatory power, Air force also wants ALH Rudra in its inventory. As per reports, Indian air force is looking to procure three squadrons of Rudra. One squadron of Air force has 16 Rudra, therefore we can expect the proposal for 48 ALH Rudra from IAF. A case for the procurement of Rudra is being moved to the Ministry of Defence.
