(28 Jan 2018) A boat depicting a giant sewer rat – known in Venice as the "pantegana" - on Sunday led the annual Venice Carnival Water Parade from the lagoon down the Grand Canal.
There were 120 boats taking part in the event with rowers decked out in spectacular costumes from pirates to Pokemon.
One boat had a papier-mache missile on the front, a Donald Trump figure and an American flag.
The parade led by the "pantegana" sewer rat was started by Venetians 10 years ago as an event dedicated to the locals, in contrast to the Flight of the Angel that comes towards the end of Carnival.  
The Flight of the Angel is when a woman dressed up as an Angel "flies" down from the Bell tower on a wire cable and into the center of St. Mark's Square.   
That event attracts a more international crowd.  
The parade is especially for Venetians who love the Grand Canal.
The locals are treated to traditional Venetian delicacies at stands along it at the end of the event.
This year Venice carnival runs from 27 January to 13 February.
