International Tiger Day aims to halt the decline in the tiger population, promote a global system to protect and expand the natural habitats of tigers, and to raise public awareness and support on the need for conservation of these majestic cats.

International Tiger Day (also known as Global Tiger Day) is observed every year on July 29 since it was first founded in 2010.

International Tiger Day was founded at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit, and its goal was to double the wild tiger population by 2022.

International Tiger Day was established in response to scientific observations, reports, and news that the tigers are in the brink of extinction and that global population of wild tigers had fallen down by 95-97 percent, with only approximately 3,000 tigers left alive. Some of the important causes for this drastic decline have been attributed to habitat loss due to poaching & illegal trade, climate change, urbanisation and increase in land use for agriculture, hunting, and human-wildlife conflict. International Tiger Day was established to highlight the plight of these wild cats and push governments, conservation organisations, NGOs and the general community for the need to take urgent action to save them.

International Tiger Day is observed globally by governments through their Environment ministries, international organisations like Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), UN Environment Programme (UNEP), UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the WWF, the IFAW and the Smithsonian Institute.

How can we support International Tiger Day?
Provide all support to authorities in their tiger conservation * efforts by helping spread the word in the community of the different activities, notify authorities of poachers and their movements, etc.
Support fund-raising events that hope to raise funds for conservation efforts by NGOs
Say no to products made of tiger parts, and educate and encourage others to do the same
Help educate people living in areas close to tiger habitats on the need to support tiger conservation efforts for the betterment of their lives and the environment in general
Support sustainable tourism in tiger reserves
