A brief overview of the 6 different types of USB cable connectors and ports. USB functionality varies by generation and type. There are three types of USB: Type-A, Type-B, Type-C. Each connecter comes in different generations (USB 1.0, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 3.1, USB 4.0). The generation number is in sequential order of release. Each connector is color coded for supported technology standard or function.

Not all USB functionality and speed is found in each type of connector. Generally, the higher the generation the faster the data speeds are with support for higher power input/output. USBs are classified by two things: Type and Standard. USB-C is the only reversable connecter.
