Ancil and Sonia Torres both became blind as adults. He is from Trinidad and Tobago, she hails from Pakistan. They are both computer scientists and experts on assistive technology. Their profession is what brought them together at an office in Washington, D.C. in the US. In this moving documentary, Ancil and Sonia explain how better use of technology gives persons with disabilities access to education, employment and entertainment. They make a strong call to engage persons with disabilities in all decisions affecting their lives. Ancil and Sonia run the Torres Foundation for the Blind in Trinidad and Tobago and an assistive technology company in Washington, D.C.

Tina Tinde, Gender and Diversity Coordinator at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies in Geneva, Switzerland, stresses the Federation’s work to assist those most at risk and to engage them directly when planning disaster response and recovery.

The documentary was filmed during Ancil and Sonia’s visit to IFRC in Geneva in December 2016 to give talks at a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. They spoke at a panel at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), engaged in a debate on inclusion of persons with persons with disabilities in the workplace at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and joined a reception at the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights that was co-hosted by Catalina Devandas Aguilar, UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
