Zappa's first project appears to have been a career as a scholarly composer. That said, apart from his training in orchestral percussion during the summer and his participation in musical activities at his high school, he was not able or willing to follow training academic and always preferred self-learning. Throughout his life, he appeared as an avid reader of scores and books, a curious listener of radio, records, cinema and television, although often limited by his small budgets in his youth. The years during which he carried out these apprenticeships, the end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s, were marked both by the avant-garde legacies of Webern, Stravinsky and Varèse and by American iconoclasts like Cage and the actors of happenings or countercultural movements. We also notice in him the Californian convergence of image and sound. Zappa worked between the two artistic fields his entire life.

One of his first television appearances gives us a fine example of Californian convergences: at twenty years old, before the mustache, he tried to appear as an avant-garde music composer with strong Cagian inspirations in the Steve Allen
Show in 1963. He created a certain effect in this variety program by doing a sort of musical happening around an amplified bicycle played as a percussion instrument (a year before Mikrophonie I!), with accompaniment from improvising instruments, 'a magnetic tape prepared by him and for reading text. The tape was prepared in his first studio, “Studio Z”, in Cucamonga, before his first legal troubles and a landmark prison sentence.
Obviously, this type of journey and events will not quickly lead to musical notoriety or financial autonomy. He will instead follow another path.

Frank Zappa participates in the plastic mutation of the sound imagination initiated by Schoenberg and Debussy and reinforced by Stravinsky, Varèse, Ligeti, Xenakis or electroacoustic and digital music. As with its “learned” predecessors, to replace the dynamics of defunct tonal music, music is now manipulated like a multidimensional plastic material.

His mental space has something plastic, close to that of Varèse who thinks of music in timbres, blocks, points and curves in time, his music becomes a play of colors and shapes arranged in time and pitch.
