A sense of longing or even existential despair can remain despite a deep and genuine grasp of the non-dual understanding. What can be done?

Rupert says: ‘This longing is the last residue of the search for happiness in you, and it doesn’t respond to reasoning, practices, methods, efforts or disciplines.

‘That can either lead to despair, because the longing remains, but there’s nothing in life that can fulfil it. Or, because the longing no longer has any object – either conventional or spiritual – to hold on to, it subsides into that for which you truly long, which is your being.

‘And that’s what we do here – when all the teaching, pathways and methods die down, we just rest. Self-abiding washes out this last residue of the sense of separation.’
