Students from SK Somaiya, accompanied by their Associate Professor, visited our palliative care centre to gain hands-on exposure to geriatrics and palliative care. The visit was designed to help students understand not just medical management, but the heart of compassionate caregiving.
The students were taken on patient rounds, where they interacted closely with our residents. These interactions brought smiles and joy, as our senior citizens truly enjoyed engaging with the young minds, sharing their stories and life experiences in a warm and lively atmosphere.

During the session, students were sensitised to the importance of sympathy, empathy, and compassion in healthcare. They were clearly explained the difference between geriatric care and palliative care, and how both play a vital role in improving the quality of life of elderly patients.

Detailed discussions were held on dementia, its rising prevalence, reasons behind the increase, and practical guidance on home-based care for dementia patients. The functions and scope of palliative care—including pain management, emotional support, and holistic care—were explained in depth.

Students also gained valuable insight into the physical, emotional, and social challenges of ageing, along with an overview of Huntington’s disease and its management within a palliative care framework.

This visit was a meaningful exchange where students learned the essence of compassionate medicine, and our senior citizens enjoyed the interaction, laughter, and attention, making it a memorable experience for everyone.
