Beijing, China - 31 October 2024

3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Zhang Xiaogang, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson:
“The Taiwan issue is at the very core of China’s core interests, and the first red line that must not be crossed in China-US relations. China urges the US to fully recognize the severe consequences of arming Taiwan which would surely backfire, and not to go further down the wrong path. Several pieces of US weaponry will not close the cross-strait military power gap, still less stop the historical trend of China’s reunification. The People’s Liberation Army will continually improve its combat readiness, comprehensively enhance the military capability to fight and win, and firmly safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Zhang Xiaogang, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson:
“The US has withdrawn from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, developed Typhon mid-range missile system, and used it as a tool to maintain its hegemony. It has made wilful deployment and stirred up troubles, which increased the risk of war in the region. It has been proven time and again that the US is a real saboteur to peace and a troublemaker.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Zhang Xiaogang, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson:
“China and India have reached resolutions on the border issues through diplomatic and military channels. The frontline troops of the two militaries are implementing the resolutions in a orderly manner. President Xi Jinping met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia. Both sides agreed that China and India should view and handle the bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, and make sure that differences on specific issues would not affect the overall bilateral relationship. We hope the Indian side will work together with China, take the important common understandings between the two state leaders as guidance, continuously implement the resolutions, and jointly safeguard peace and tranquility in the border areas.”
8. Various of briefing
STORYLINE:
China's Defense Ministry on Thursday condemned the recent U.S. arms sales to Taiwan and said the Chinese military would enhance its military capability to safeguard national sovereignty.

Spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang said in a monthly briefing that the $2 billion arms sales, approved by Washington on Saturday and including the first-time delivery of an advanced surface-to-air missile defense system, would "surely backfire" and urged the US not to go further down the wrong path.

Under the island’s new president, Lai Ching-te, Taiwan has been stepping up defense measures as China increased its military threats against the territory it claims as part of its own.

“Several pieces of US weaponry will not close the cross-strait military gap, still less stop the historical trend of China’s reunification,” said Zhang.

Zhang also reiterated China’s opposition to the deployment of a U.S. midrange missile system “Typhon” to the northern Philippines and accused the U.S. of using the missiles “to maintain its hegemony.”

The Philippines and the US agreed that missile system would be kept in the northern Philippines indefinitely to boost deterrence.

"It has been proven time and again that the US is a real saboteur to peace and a troublemaker," said Zhang.
