The Lower Garths 360° - An experiment in virtual environment (2017)

This work was made as part of our 'An experiment in Virtual Environment' project (2016-17), made possible with funding from Arts Council England and supported by Samsung.

This Virtual Reality (VR) artwork explores the 'Constructivist style' concrete play structures that were once scattered around Killingworth township (then in Northumberland, now Tyne & Wear). Installed in the late 1960s and said to have inspired the Apollo Pavilion, they were demolished in the 1990s. Each play structure was built of 'L-shaped' components arranged in various calibrations (our logo is based on the one that once stood outside John's family house).

In this work we've reconstructed 25 structures as seen from a child's point of view. We've simulated the lighting conditions to match those of an early summer's evening in 1977.
