For nearly a quarter of a century I've been a devoted fan of Les Savy Fav. I downloaded the band's excellent 'Rome (Written Upside Down)' EP sometime in 2000 after someone posted it on the alt.bin.sounds.mp3.indie newsgroup and their French-sounding name proved irresistible. Then 'I.C. Timer' kicked in ( • I.C. Timer ) and I just haven't been the same. First came their first two records, '3/5' and 'The Cat and the Cobra'. By the time their third, 'Go Forth' came out in 2001, LSF were a mainstay in my musical rotation. But the band would go on an extended hiatus after their album 'Root For Ruin' came out in 2010.
-----
Then after essentially lying dormant for over fourteen years, periodically emerging to play the odd show here and there, came a March 2024 upload of a live show from London's Electric Ballroom:
• Les Savy Fav (live @ Electric Ballroom, Lo...
With this London show, the band was back with brand new songs and the promise of a new album 'Oui LSF' to come in early May, followed by some touring. And I knew my mission would be to see them, no matter what.
-----
In a live setting, LSF are a veritable experience. Prior to this year, I'd only been able to see the band live once, in Vancouver Canada in December of 2007 on their 'Let's Stay Friends' tour. I had read all of the press regarding the intensity of their shows, the exuberant unpredictability of their lead singer Tim Harrington on stage; they did not disappoint.
-----
First, I hopped on a flight to Washington DC in order to see them at the venerable Black Cat on June 28th (you can watch it here: • Les Savy Fav live @ Black Cat, Washington ... ), a show that was sheer joy and catharsis. But I was not about to pass up on the chance to see the band play on consecutive nights at the Zebulon in Los Angeles this Fall. And what a brilliant idea that turned out to be.
-----
I've said this before but LSF would have to play three hours in order to cover all the bases for me. And some of my favorite songs ('I.C. Timer', 'Bloom on Demand', 'Asleeper's Union', 'Reprobates' resume', 'Wake Up!', 'The Orchard') are live rarities, so you just go to the show, enjoy what's played much like it was the tasting menu at a nice restaurant and go home with a silly grin on your face. But over these two evenings, the band would play many of the song that I desperately wanted/needed to hear. So sure, there was no 'Bloom on Demand', but there was 'Reprobate's Resumé' and other ditties from 'Go Forth'.

Shooting at the Zebulon is tricky because of the shape of the stage. Then comes the inherent challenge of trying to shoot a LSF show given Tim's legendary forays into the audience. Now, if you are a LSF fan and have seen them live before, you know that the deal is that Tim is just going to
disappear into the crowd while the band just keeps ripping on. And although your instinct is to try and follow the action, once in the crowd you're not going to catch much on camera. So that part of the experience is best left to those in the crowd (spoiler alert, I got to stroke Tim's beard on night two!!!). Meanwhile, folks at the front of the stage are tasked with feeding the tangle of microphone cords to facilitate these excursions. And there will be some Tim costume changes. And it's likely that he will end up in his underpants. And fun will be had by all.
Both shows were absolutely fabulous. A substantially different set list, so be on the lookout for that one here ( • Les Savy Fav live @ Zebulon Cafe, Los Ange... ).
