During November 2022, Haunted Auckland's Mark Wallbank visited an intriguing location in the UK.
Known to locals as the Caynton Caves, this is a series of man-made underground chambers dug into private land in Shropshire, England.
The true original purpose and date of construction is as yet unknown, with dating opinions ranging from as far back as the 17th, to the 19th century.
The caverns comprise an irregular series of neo-Romanesque ambulatories and chambers hollowed out of sandstone, with carved archways, pillars, symbols and niches, apparently for candles.
Entry is via slithering legs first into a tiny hole in the ground.
One suggestion is that they were the result of quarrying during the mid-19th century and were then turned by the landowners, into a private grotto or underground folly.
Others have claimed that the caverns are older, perhaps dating back at least to the 17th century, associating them with the Knights Templar, Freemasons, or some ritualist cult or religion.
The caves also have a haunted reputation with reports from those that have spent time in the caves claiming reports of voices, shadow people, items thrown and people being "touched" (even "punched") while in the caves.
