Bait Finesse Fishing (BFS) Tackle System | Shimano Pro Tips

Bait finesse (BFS) fishing is nothing new — our friends over in Japan have been doing it for years — but a BFS tackle system allows anglers to use light lines and light lures with a baitcaster reel rather than a spinning reel. Shimano Elite Pro Alex Wetherell has seen increased success with small baits using BFS tackle and discusses what he thinks makes the best fishing tackle system for BFS fishing using 5-pound test Shimano Mastiff FC fluorocarbon fishing line.

The main component of BFS is the reel, and the Shimano Curado BFS is highly effective because of the Finesse Tune Braking (FTB) system. This unique technology takes that braking system, usually connected to the spool, and moves it over to the palming sideplate. The FTB system reduces the weight of the spool and makes it easier for anglers to cast smaller and lightweight baits. The FTB system also automatically adjusts to slow down the spool only when braking is needed to prevent backlashes.

The Shimano Curado BFS reel pairs perfectly with the Curado BFS rod, a rod that delivers a fast action with a soft tip that doesn't sacrifice power when it is needed. The Curado A series of rods features Hi-Power X construction, reducing weight and increasing strength and durability. The Curado BFS rod loads up to help propel the small and lightweight baits.

Wetherell uses a 5-pound test Mastiff FC fluorocarbon line to complete his BFS tackle system because the fishing line has a thinner diameter that can cast longer distances. But even with this small diameter, Wetherell has increased confidence in the hookset and knows his knots will hold up due to Mastiff FC's NANOARMOR technology. The nano-size ridges on the line are too small to see with the naked eye but bind together to provide superior knot strength.

Wetherell uses the Shimano Macbeth 39 Tiny as a finesse bait that's deal for completing the Shimano BFS system.
