I believe this was originally written as a serious song warning listeners of the evils of drink but it was adopted by the Scout movement in America as a campfire song. As each verse is only one rhyming couplet long it is ideal for making up your own verses. Also the chords are simple and easy to harmonise if you have more people. This is by no means a comprehensive list of all the verses I know of but you can have too much of a good thing!
