Mike Schapoehler is introducing 7th graders to the world of science, robotics, and automation during their field trip to the Lancaster Science Factory! He's showcasing "Tim" the TM collaborative robot from Omron, while discussing the roles that cobots and robotics play are playing in revolutionizing industries like fast food, healthcare, and manufacturing.

Throughout the session, Mike provided insights into the capabilities of the robots. He demonstrated the vision capabilities by having the cobot take pictures of the kids, and then talked to them about how "landmarks" work with moving test tubes. The kids also really enjoyed listening to Mike narrate YouTube videos that included all sorts of other cobot applications, like assembling circuit boards, product sorting & boxing, and even cooking.

The students were also interested in us debunking scary robot myths and answering all their questions. Are we going to be ruled by robot overlords? Probably not 😆 He made sure to emphasize the precision, efficiency, and especially the safety features of these robots, highlighting how they are designed to collaborate with humans in various environments. "You know it's no different than when you watch Star Wars, right, and they have the robot next to them helping them? Well, we're in that world right now."

The goal was that hopefully as the students witness real-world applications of robotics, from automated grocery stores to medical laboratories, they'll gain a deeper understanding of how technology shapes our daily lives. At the end of the day, we hope the students left feeling encouraged to embrace technological advancements and explore opportunities in STEM fields!
