Program Note
Dreams for SATB Choir

Dreams was commissioned by The First Parish in Bedford, Unitarian Universalist.
Massachusetts, at the invitation of their music director, Brad Connor, who approached me to
Create a new work for the church’s vibrant choral program. From our earliest conversations,
We agreed that the piece should be rooted in poetry that speaks to hope, perseverance, and
the shared human spirit. We chose the celebrated poem Dreams by Langston Hughes, whose
words have inspired generations with their clarity and power:
Hold fast to dreams,
For if dreams die,
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly .
The music reflects both the fragility and strength found in Hughes’ lines. Gentle, lyrical
passages evoke the tenderness of aspiration, while richer harmonies and dynamic swells
suggest the urgency of clinging to one’s vision in the face of adversity. The interplay of the
Four voices symbolize community—individual lines weaving together to form a collective
message of resilience.
Composed in September 2025, Dreams is a meditation on the importance of hope and a
reminder that, like the poem itself, music has the power to sustain and uplift us even in the
most challenging times.
