Six weekends of major engineering work in the North East will begin this weekend, February 8/9.

Major upgrades at Darlington station and across the area will mean the line is closed in both directions between Darlington and Newcastle and between Eaglescliffe, Darlington/Bishop Auckland

Throughout the six weekends, additional work will include:

• Installation of a semi-automatic track warning system between Ferryhill South and Tursdale junctions to keep engineers safer when working on the track.

• Renewal of more than half a mile of rail, sleeper and ballast at Chester-le-Street.

• Strengthening the ballast beneath the track at Tursdale Junction, restoring the line speed after previous rail upgrade work.

• Creation of walkways beside the line between Durham station and Tursdale Junction, providing safer routes for engineers working on foot near the track

• Completion of 14 other smaller jobs, including track maintenance, telecoms work and preparations for Railway 200 celebrations.

During the weekend closures, the following alterations will take place:

𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲:

Buses will replace trains between York and Newcastle.

𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥:

Saturday

A reduced train service will operate between London Kings Cross and Bradford Interchange/Sunderland. Some trains will start/terminate at York instead of Sunderland.

Sunday

A reduced train service will operate between London Kings Cross and Sunderland. Some trains will start/terminate at York instead of Sunderland.

𝐋𝐍𝐄𝐑:

A reduced service of 1 train per hour will run in each direction between London Kings Cross and Newcastle on a diversionary route via the Durham Coast, extending journey times by up to 60 minutes. ​

All other services will start/terminate at York and Newcastle.

Rail replacement buses will run between York and Newcastle.

𝐋𝐮𝐦𝐨:

No services will run between London Kings Cross and Newcastle all weekend. A reduced and amended timetable will run between Newcastle and Edinburgh only.

𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧:

Trains between Saltburn/Middlesbrough and Darlington/Bishop Auckland will start/ terminate at Eaglescliffe.

Rail replacement buses will run between Eaglescliffe and Darlington/Bishop Auckland.

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬:

Buses will replace trains between York and Newcastle.

There will be no trains to or from Darlington or Durham over this period, although rail replacement coaches will operate throughout to ensure that customers can complete their journeys. ​

The last weekend for engineering works will be the weekend of March 15/16 during this weekend, LNER services will not call at Northallerton.
