These are some of my cake decorating tools I use for my how to decorate cupcakes tutorials. I explain some of the tools & equipment I use in decorating my cupcakes. Some are actual cake decorating tools, others are things I found useful like the different size straws for cutting out little circles. There are plenty more tools but these are the ones I have been using the most so far in regards to decorating my cupcakes. You can use many things instead of actual cake decorating tools - just look around to see what you have & you may find things already in your kitchen & house. I also show you the fondant brand I use.

Tools & materials I go through in the video are listed below:

1. Off Set Spatula (about 22cm long from top to bottom) (to ice my cupcakes)
2. Non Stick Rolling Pin (to roll fondant with)
3. Non Stick Mat (Plastic chopping board or place mat)
4. Corn Flour Bag (home made one with some corn flour in a handkerchief tied up with a rubber band - used to dust your surfaces with so fondant doesn't stick)
5. Palette Knives (an art tool usually sold in a set of about 6 or more - I use it to lift up my rolled out fondant & also to cut fondant)
6. Circle Cutters ( I use the 6 & ½ cm one the most - you can also use other things like the round container of cupcake wrappers & also a round cardboard template & a pointy craft knife to cut it out with)
7. Pointy Craft Knife (craft knife with a blade on it for fine point cutting with fondant)
8. Glass Cup or Tea Light Holder (used upside down to cover your small amounts of leftover fondant so that it doesn't dry out while you are working on your mat)
9. Straws in all different sizes (cut off into shorter sections to use a little circle cutters, also cut in half lengthways to use for making indents into fondant like mouths)
10. Toothpicks (used to create little indents into fondant for texturing purposes, also trim off the toothpick to use as a tool to help get fondant out of the straw cutters)
11. Tweezers (to help pick up edible Cashous sugar ball decorations)
12. Cashous (edible sugar ball decorations - you can just roll up little balls of fondant & roll them in you edible shimmer colours to get something similar)
13. Brushes in different sizes (for gluing with water, dusting on petal dust, painting on food dyes, also use the end of a rounded brush to create indents for eyes & for cashous)
14. Small Plastic Cup (to hold water for gluing)
15. Food Dyes & Edible Food Markers/Pen (for colouring fondant or painting on details to cupcakes)
16. Small Dish (to hold your food dyes in while painting)
17. Fondant Icing - (brand I use is Pettinice by Bakels (brand))
18. Petal Dust in Pink (for dusting onto cheeks of faces)

More information about fondant icing below:

I use a type of icing called fondant icing which is a type of sugar dough (used on wedding cakes). You can get it from your local supermarket or specialty cake decorating supplier. You can even make it. I usually buy it in white & colour it by using food dyes & mixing it through. For darker colours like black, bright red & bright green I buy it pre coloured as it's harder to mix the darker colours. These colours in fondant are more sticky due to the dye content so I usually mix a little white fondant through it to make it easier to work with. It can be sticky to work with & changes depending on the weather in your area - it absorbs moisture from the air so can be sticky to work with but it normally dries when exposed to air so you need to wrap excess fondant up in cling wrap and then a zip lock bag.

It may be hard when you take it out of its packaging so you would need to knead it to make it more workable as it warms up and becomes softer and sticker in your hands. To stop the stickiness of fondant you can dust your surfaces with corn flour. It comes in many brands - I use Bakels Pettinence Icing but there are many other brands like Satin Ice and Orchards.

Tylose powder can be used to mix through your fondant so that your figurines set harder & quicker than just fondant alone. You can leave it out but you risk your figurines sagging and not fully drying in time. You can get it online or from your specialty cake decorating supply shops.
