Violence across the Pacific territory of New Caledonia continues as French forces fight to regain control of the island.

A “major operation” was launched to regain a road linking the island’s capital city of Noumea and the main international airport.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin confirmed the operation was “aimed at completely regaining control of the 60km main road”.

The riots have continued for almost a week and left six people dead, three indigenous Kanak and two police officers were confirmed victims.

A sixth person was killed on Saturday following a gunfight at a makeshift roadblock, leaving two further injured.

The riots began last week after lawmakers announced French residents living in New Caledonia could vote in local elections.

The new law angered indigenous locals as many believed they would lose their voice.
