According to the Indian aesthetic theory, the basic sentiments or 'rasa' are nine. Literally the word 'rasa' means 'juice', 'taste' and in this case it refers to the particular state of mind of the spectator who is supposed to 'taste' the basic sentiment of a poem conveyed by the dancer's acting or 'abhinaya'.
The nine basic sentiments in this item are attributed to Lord Shiva and reflect nine different shades of his eternal 'leela' or play.
HASYA (JOY): Shiva smiles affectionately on hearing the childish quarrels of his two sons, Ganesha, with long ears and an elephant's trunk and Kartikeya, the six-headed one. Since each of them claims to be the best, Shiva proposes a competition: the palm of victory will be carried off by the one who, after going around the entire universe, will reach first and eat the sweet held in Shiva's palm. While Kartikeya starts on a tour around the world on his peacock, the clever Ganesha, on his little mouse, takes a quick turn around his parents, Shiva and Parvati, who are equal to the entire universe.
