Making A Gold Leaf Picture Frame - Woodworking

I wanted to try and make a picture frame for a very long time so this week, before the snow falls in my area, I decided to give it a try.
I wanted a weathered look for this frame.

As the picture I wanted to frame was this old english ship drawing, I thought that having a frame looking like it sunk with the ship, spent years under the sea and was found again would be nice. That's why I didn't cover the whole frame in gold leaf, but only applied some, to give it its final look. And I'm pretty happy how it turned out.

I used ash for the frame. I started by cutting it to size and reduce the thickness to 24mm/0.94inches. Then I cut the four parts 45 degrees; made the rabbets for the back panel and customized the frame with a molding router bit. Although I should have made the molding first then cut the 45 degree angles afterward, it worked just fine in that order as well.

Once the frame was glued and dry, I cut the corners to insert wedges and make it stronger. Then it was time to put the gold leaf on, and after two coats of polyurethane, it was all done.

Making a frame for the first time wasn't easy, but I learnt a lot and I'm now ready to make a lot more. I really hope you'll like the video, if you have any question, leave them in the comments, I'll do my best to answer them all. Till next week, keep making and thanks for watching!
