柳宗元(773年—819年11月28日),字子厚,唐代中期士大夫、文學家與思想家,河東人,亦稱柳河東、柳柳州,柳宗元家勢顯赫,世代為官。年輕時仕途得意,平步青雲,曾參與王叔文的永貞革新,不幸旋即失敗,獲罪貶謔永州,自此長期流放,身心寂寞痛苦,十年後改授柳州刺史,卒於官,享年四十六歲。柳宗元以文學、思想、經學、宗教等領域的成就著稱。文學方面,柳宗元在古文與韓愈齊名,為唐代古文運動領袖,而古文運動的先驅是陳子昂,提倡“文以明道”,作品永州八記堪稱山水遊記典範之作,為中國遊記文體的先河,影響深遠;傳記與寓言亦各有佳作存世,其擅用曲筆寄託個人悲憤;柳詩以山水著稱,風格多變,常與陶淵明相提並論。思想方面,柳宗元關懷民間疾苦與百姓福祉,自視為儒家改革者,為中唐儒學復興運動的代表人物。他主張天與自然跟人事無關,反駁迷信習俗,上承荀子、王充的理性主義思想。他認為郡縣制優勝於封建制,封建非聖人本意,所著《封建論》對後人多所啟發。經學方面,柳宗元追隨啖助、陸淳的春秋學,主張經學不可淪於瑣碎,須闡述聖人義理,影響後世的春秋學。宗教方面,柳宗元認同佛教,並做為其仕途失敗的慰藉。他認為儒、釋兩者並無衝突,可以並存互補。後世編撰柳宗元作品《柳河東集》傳世。

Liu Zongyuan (773-November 28, 819), courtesy name Zihou, was a scholar-official, writer and thinker in the middle period of the Tang Dynasty. He was from Hedong, also known as Liu Hedong and Liu Liuzhou. Liu Zongyuan's family was prominent and his family had served as officials for generations. When he was young, he was successful in his career and rose rapidly. He participated in Wang Shuwen's Yongzhen Reform, but unfortunately it failed soon after. He was convicted and exiled to Yongzhou. Since then, he has been exiled for a long time, feeling lonely and painful physically and mentally. Ten years later, he was appointed as the governor of Liuzhou and died in office at the age of 46. Liu Zongyuan is famous for his achievements in literature, thought, classics, religion and other fields. In terms of literature, Liu Zongyuan is as famous as Han Yu in ancient prose and is the leader of the ancient prose movement in the Tang Dynasty. The pioneer of the ancient prose movement was Chen Ziang, who advocated "using literature to clarify the truth". His work "Eight Records of Yongzhou" can be regarded as a model of landscape travel notes, which is the forerunner of the Chinese travel writing style and has a far-reaching influence. There are also excellent works of biographies and fables. He is good at using indirect writing to express personal grief and indignation. Liu's poems are famous for landscapes and varied in style, and are often compared with Tao Yuanming. In terms of ideology, Liu Zongyuan cares about the suffering of the people and the welfare of the people. He regards himself as a Confucian reformer and a representative figure of the Confucian revival movement in the mid-Tang Dynasty. He advocates that heaven and nature have nothing to do with human affairs, refutes superstitious customs, and inherits the rationalist ideas of Xunzi and Wang Chong. He believes that the county system is superior to the feudal system, and feudalism is not the original intention of the saints. His "On Feudalism" has inspired many later generations. In terms of classics, Liu Zongyuan followed the Spring and Autumn Studies of Dan Zhu and Lu Chun, advocating that classics should not be reduced to trivialities, but should explain the righteousness of the saints, which influenced the Spring and Autumn Studies of later generations. In terms of religion, Liu Zongyuan identified with Buddhism and used it as a consolation for his failure in his official career. He believed that Confucianism and Buddhism had no conflict and could coexist and complement each other. Later generations compiled Liu Zongyuan's works "Liu Hedong Collection" and handed down to the world.
