Oakland California - The Best Wharf Vibe - Jack London Square - San Francisco Bay Hidden Gem

One of the best San Francisco Bay area tourist spots is a bit of a local secret. Jack London Square in Oakland California is a short 30 minute ferry ride from San Francisco Embarcadero Ferry Building and makes for a perfect day trip from San Francisco. The ferry provides brilliant views of the bay bridge and the exciting port of Oakland. Jack London Square is the old waterfront with bay views that has been converted to European styled walkways with a booming bar and restaurant scene. There is also a historic twist with California's second oldest bar - Heinold's First and Last Saloon along with writer Jack London's log cabin from his days in the Yukon of Alaska. It has the wharf vibe but its not a tourist trap like San Francisco's fisherman wharf might be characterized.

The Ferry building is a great jumping off point because its a great place to sample food and shops in the historic ferry building

We visit Heinolds First and Last, Everett & Jones, Stainte Irish bar, Federation Brewing, Plank and Jack London's Cabin.
