The Dakota Access Pipeline and Its Environmental Impact

There is a long way from Bakken Field in North Dakota to Illinois, where there is an existing crude oil market near Patoka. So the feasible way to transport oil in approximately 1,172 miles is through a pipeline that should connect the Bakken and Three Forks oil production areas. But there is one problem. The pipeline has to pass within half a mile of the existing Standing Rock Sioux Reservation limits and goes beneath the Missouri and Mississippi rivers as well as Lake Oahe.
Now, imagine a pipeline carrying almost 19 million gallons of toxic fracked oil per day from North Dakota to Illinois, tearing through delicate animal habitats, sacred sites, and traditional indigenous lands, including the Missouri River. It's a recipe for disaster. That’s why in North Dakota, the Standing Rock Sioux tribe has been leading a historic fight to protect it from the Dakota Access pipeline. As no matter how safe the pipeline should be, Spills are inevitable, and the environmental impact of this pipeline is unacceptable for the tribe.
