Selecting the One Cannabis Plant Out of a Million

Inherent Genetic Variability
When growing a population of plants there is sometimes that one standout.
What makes it a standout is up to the growers discretion.
Morphology
Tall or short?
Cannabinoids
CBD, CBG?
Terpenes
What profile?
Flowering time
Early or late?
Yield
Quantity or quality?
Plant behavior
Self supporting, need pruning?
Disease resistance
Powdery mildew, Bud Rot



Morphology
Tall plants may be better suited for larger yields per plant
Shorter plants can be advantageous if the indoor market (ex. Grow tents are the target audience)
Internode spacing should also be considered.
Tighter internode spacing means a more compact plant with greater overall density. However, this can also increase potential for diseases.

Cannabinoides
While THC and CBD are what is commonly selected, some breeders are looking to develop strains that have greater concentrations of other cannabinoids.
Breeding for CBG has gained some interest for its potential uses.



Terpenes
Not only are cannabinoids important, but the effects of a given plant product are receiving more attention.
Breeding for and selection a unique terpen profile can make a strain standout and be sought after.
The difficult part is that the terpen profiles can be associated with taste and effects which are going to be interpreted differently by different people.



Flowering Time
This can relate to when preflowers are first seen or when an autoflower actually starts to get into the flowering phase.
Early flowering can help reduce the duration needed to complete the growth cycle.
Delaying the flowering time (increase in required vegetative phase) can help build a bigger plant structure which may be advantageous if you are seeking to breed a high biomass producing plant.



Yield
Regarding yield this can be relating to one of two main factors…
Quantity = looking just the total amount of plant (product produced)
Quality = here the breeding is looking more at the chemicals and compounds produced and not so much at the total amount of plant material.
Some grows will sacrifice total quantity for improved quality (which can be directly related to terpenes produced.



Plant Behavior
How much do you have to “fight” with the plant.
This can refer to how well does the plant self support itself, is it a strong plant or does it need staking
Also, consider how much pruning (or what pruning method) may be a good fit for the plants natural style.
Weaker plants that require staking should be considered more for indoor applications.



Disease Resistance
Often overlooked, but how resistant is a plant/strain to certain diseases can be a very important trait to breed into a genetic lineage.
This can become obvious if in a large growing area all the plants have a disease but there is one that the disease “missed”. This does not happen, so this is a clear sign that there is some resistance inherit to that plants genetics
This can be a very desirable quality and makes for a great addition to a breeding program.



Different is Not Always Better
Mutations are often not beneficial but in a case where they are growers should consider propagating that plant to preserve those genetics.
Often cloning is suggested to ensure the exact same genetics are captured and can be multiplied.



Attention to Detail Is Important
You want to look carefully at all plants
Keeping records is an important part of this process.
If you happen to get lucky and get that unique genetic profile you want to be able to capture and preserve it.



Selection Process…
The selection process can take a long time, and even longer if you do not know what you are looking for;-)
Either select a standout plant and continue to breed and select for a consistent and repeatable qualities
or

Determine what you want to breed for and start to select for those qualities.
